I’m traveling to Mongolia in Spring and I’ve been inviting people to join me to save some cost on tours, guides and a driver since Mongolia is 90% wilderness, it will be an adventure trip of a lifetime. The major concern of many is flights are expensive! So I started looking for the cheapest way to get to Mongolia from Philippines. If I do a quick search on Skyscanner, the roundtrip flights from Manila to UlanBataar, Mongolia’s capital is around 40,000 Philippine Pesos with 2 stops in China! It’s even cheaper to fly to Europe with direct flights that can cost less than 30,000 Pesos.
Anyway, I’ve been spending days to figure this out, so I can convince some people to join me if only the airfare cost is the concern. Philippine Passport holders are visa free in Mongolia for 21 days, so I decided to make the trip worth it and travel for 21 days in the country. If vacation leave is not your issue I’m here to help you out to find the cheapest way to get to Mongolia from Philippines so you could join me in this adventure of a lifetime. Anyway, wether you are joining me or not, I decided to write this down to help my fellow outdoor enthusiast to achieve their dream of visiting Mongolia one day without breaking the bank.
Geography wise, the cheapest way you can get close to Mongolia is to travel to China (you would need a Chinese multiple-entry visa). Searching through Skyscanner, I found a flight that costs 11,137 in summer (June) with China Eastern that has a long layover in Shanghai. Imagine if you’re able to secure a Piso fare to Beijing? You hit the jackpot!
From Beijing, the journey to Ulanbaatar can be a direct train ride for 28 hours, though it costs a whopping 200 USD one way! Definitely not an option if you’re on a budget.
Here’s the cheapest way to get to Mongolia from Philippines (from Manila via Beijing):
Beijing to Erlian (Zamyn Uud) by sleeper bus
Cost: 220 CNY (US$ 33.48)
From Muxiyuan Caihua Long Distance Bus Station, board a sleeper bus in the afternoon that arrives in Erlian the next morning. Erlian is a Chinese Town in the Mongolin border and the same bus will take you to cross the border to Zamyn Uud, a district at Southeastern side of Mongolia.
Zamiin Udd to Ulaanbaatar by train
Cost: 22.850 MNT (US $11.60) – Hard Sleeper
Travel time to Ulaanbaatar is 15 hours.
Total Cost: US$ 45.08
Total travel time can vary since you will be crossing the border.
Mongolia is such a massive beautiful country, I can’t wait to be there. Hopefully you can join me! Message me at the contact page if you’re interested and I’ll give you more details.
