Wearing no armors, we braved the city of King’s Landing and seated at the Iron Throne not fearing Cersei’s backlash using the Mountain’s torturous shadow. What we did was unimaginably insane, but you will really sit at the Iron Throne at the end of Game of Thrones Tour in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Though we were surprised by the city’s charm and beauty, we can’t deny that our primary reason of visiting the famous city of the Balkans – Dubrovnik, Croatia is to visit places where many of the scenes from our favourite TV series, Game of Thrones were filmed. The architecture of the old town is impressive!
If you haven’t heard of the city of Dubrovnik, it is one of the prominent destinations of Balkan peninsula. A Croatian city famous for its Old Town encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century which survived earthquakes and wars through the years. Paved with limestone the city old town is lined with shops and restaurants everywhere even its small alleys. At night, the city turns into a paradise for clubbers.
Dubrovnik is the setting of King’s Landing, the capital of Seven Kingdoms. Though many of the structures such as the Red Keep and the Great Sept of Baelor were made from CGI, the city’s amazing medieval structures made a charming appeal to the producers and directors of the series. Many of the biggest scenes including the “walk of atonement” of Cersei Lannister were filmed here.

The tour is a mix of Dubrovnik’s very own history plus behind the scenes of the series and insider infos from our guide who was also working as an extra during tapings of the series in the city. She even have pictures with the casts and one picture with Sir Gregor Clegane (The Mountain) carrying her.
The thrill of being at the exact spots where the scenes were shot was an incredible feeling but the beauty of the city and the crystal clear waters around it is a site to behold. It’s beautiful! They call it the Black Water Bay in the series but this is the Adriatic sea in real life.
Of course, the highlight of the trip was the exact location where Cersei Lannister did her walk of atonement. It was shot at the great stone steps leading to the Jewish church which was facing down the market and the other side of the city. In the series, you can view the Red Keep from the other side of the staircase where Cersei was walking down naked as part of her punishment for her crimes. If you didn’t know, Lena Headey, the talented actress portraying Cersei was pregnant doing the shoot and the British-American actress Rebecca Van Cleave was her body double who actually did walk naked in front of hundreds of extras and crew for days. The city was closed from public during the filming and all the property owners inside the city were compensated. Aside from paying all the property owners/leasers to vacate the place for days, the crew sealed every window and every single small hole that anyone can peek at or take a view of the shooting.
The tour ends at a small souvenir shop where there’s a replica of the famous iron throne. We went back to the great stone steps and made our own versions of “Walk of Shame”. It was hilarious and other tourists were on it and shouting “shame” on our faces while we do our own walk of shame. You can watch it at the end of the video below:
There are plenty of things to do in Dubrovnik aside from the GOT tour. Don’t miss climbing or taking a cable car to Srđ Mountain to catch the best views of the city.
